After my mums treatment 5 years ago, I was wondering if anyone knew of any developments in tooth protection during radiotherapy.
A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with base of tongue cancer and I'm sure there is something which can be applied to the teeth to help save them.

Hi, I always thought that the RT damaged surrounding tissue including blood vessels and so blood supply to the teeth was reduced. Also saliva producing glands are permanently damaged.
All these factors increase tooth decay.

Good oral hygiene, see dentist/hygienist regularly, ask dentist for prescription for duraphat toothpaste and use a pea size amount. This toothpaste is high in fluoride. Also use tepe brushes for cleaning between teeth.Always brush last thing at night as this is most important when suffering from a dry mouth .
