I have one enlarged tonsil, I have suffered from tonsillitis before so I was thinking maybe it came back. I have no pain, sometimes feel like there’s something in my throat. I also have these spots/bumps at the back of my tongue, on the side. They are near my teeth. I also get these white patches on the side of my tongue. I am 18 and all the google symptoms are leading me to one answer. Hopefully I could get some clarification here. Thanks
Hello Tina Gin
Im sorry you are worrying.
Just a few comments if they might be helpful.... firstly, assuming you have seen your GP and NOT referred under the two week wait scheme then this would imply they are not concerned. But chase your appointment if you have not heard anything - things do get lost in the system and we need to help administrate sometimes. There is great value in getting a negative result when seen.
Secondly.... there are two main types of mouth/throat cancer as I understand it. One comes with a lifetime of heavy smoking (you have not yet had enough years in you to accumulate this) and the other is related to the HPV which girls of your age are vaccinated against in school (assuming this occurred before you were sexually active it is effective in the majority of HPV cancers)
I had tonsil cancer recently with one enlarged tonsil I could feel. If you have a cancer in an area you can see then changes can be relatively quick making a potentially suspect diagnoses easier to identify. My enlarged tonsil also had a small area of ulceration then developed a heavy white mucous coating on most of it. Tonsil cancers don't stay the same for long. I gave myself three weeks to see if things improved and as they worsened I sought help. If yours is not progressing in an unfavourable direction thats a good sign.
On a final note, HPV cancer (affecting more younger patients but by young I mean 30's, 40's and 50's) is highly treatable especially when caught early which is most likely when one can visualise the signs and symptoms in the mouth as opposed to hidden down the inside of the throat. Those spots are TINY and tongues get covered in temporary odd things in the short term often.
