Greetings. I'm a 22yo male with no previous dental history apart from a few cavities. I smoke very irregularly (haven't in months, at max 1-2 times/wk). I recently noticed a flap of skin under my tongue. It's loose and fleshy, and it sticks out where the bottom of my mouth meets my tongue to the right of my frenulum.

There's an album of pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/hw8zM . I'm talking about the (fairly obvious) crescent-shaped lump on the left side of my mouth in the pictures. It's actually on my right.

Is it a Fimbriated fold or something else? Should I be worried that it's only on one side of my mouth? Thanks a ton!

Hello GPetrino

My take: The appearance is of normal tissue that could have been a result of healing following trauma years ago, especially if it been there long.

My advice would be to see your dentist for an opinion. He might refer you to to a specialist for an opinion (as it is not a common finding) who might just decide to observe it as an aberration of normal or biopsy it if it looks suspicious.

Best wishes

A few months ago I had an identical flap appear under my tongue (and I do mean IDENTICAL, it was even on the same side of my mouth). At the time I was quite concerned and was on the verge of making an appointment with my doctor when, after about a week, it started to become less noticeable. Within 2 weeks from when I first noticed it, it had virtually disappeared. It's now as though it was never there.

I remembered this post from when I was trying to research what it could be and thought I would share my experience in case anyone else should come across this in future. For what it’s worth I’m a 38 year old male.
What did you find out about this? I have EXACTLY the same thing. Mine looks just like your picture and I've been looking all over the internet trying to figure it out. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!
