My ex husband had surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from his tongue 2 weeks ago.  He had a partial glossectomy at the base of his tongue. He did not do a graft or suture it closed.  He cauterized the surgical site and is allowing the tongue to heal on its own.  His oncologist was able to preserve the lingual nerve but he is experiencing a tremendous amount of pain 24 hours a day.  He barely can eat because the lingual nerve is still exposed and waiting for the tongue to heal.   He alternates Tylenol 3 and Motrin.  He says the stronger meds don't really seem to give him any better of relief.  Does anyone have any suggestions on better ways of managing the pain?
