I would like to let you know about a new book that I wrote that chronicles my journey as a physician who is also a throat cancer survivor who learns to speak again. It is entitled:” My Voice- A physician’s personal experience with throat cancer”.
This book captures three years of my life that followed throat cancer diagnosis and tells my personal story of facing and dealing with medical and surgical treatments and adjusting to life afterwards. As a physician with lifelong experience in caring for patients, I share my insights and perspective on these events as he experiences for the first time the effects of severe illness through the eyes of a patient. I endured the consequences of radiation, repeated surgeries, and prolonged hospitalizations. I confronted medical errors in my care, discrimination following loss of his vocal cords, and struggled to regain my ability to speak again and find a new meaning to my life. I share my fears, anxieties, frustrations, failures, and ultimate adaptation and adjustment to life with continuous uncertainty about the future.
Readers of this book will gain insight into the mind of a patient with a life threatening illness such as cancer. This book can assist readers in dealing with trying times in their own lives and shed insight into the struggles that patients with cancer of the head and neck face and how to overcome them. It is my hope that through my insights, health care professionals can become more aware of what their patients actually experience, and patients who face similar hardships may find out how to cope with them.
The entire book can be read on my blog at: http://dribrook.blogspot.com/ There is also a link there for those who are interested in getting a hard copy of the book.
